The main theme of Jacobi's thesis, in 1825,
is transformation of rational functions, starting form the problem
of generalizing the Lagrange interpolation to several variables.
Jacobi develops tools that he will use later in the theory of
elliptic integrals, of multiple residues, and of alternants.
We shall reinterpret his computations in terms of symmetrization
operators on polynomials, and correct some inexactitude in his
main theorem.
