We give the explicit analytic development of Macdonald
polynomials in terms of "modified complete" and elementary
symmetric functions. These expansions are obtained by
inverting the Pieri formula. Specialization yields similar
developments for monomial, Jack and Hall--Littlewood
symmetric functions.
